mutter slater, stackridge:
I
think it must have been the 30th Dec '72 gig - I always remember it as
being 'New Year's Eve' celebration, but my memory could be playing me
false - when a large cake was wheeled onto the stage at the crucial moment
only for Peter Gabriel to pop out and wish everyone a Happy New Year.
Someone e-mailed me recently, who mentioned that he came up to buy me a
drink at a bar near The Friars before a gig. He butted in on a
conversation I was having at the time with someone he didn't recognise,
who turned out to be Peter. I think this must have been the same night.
Then again, there's no real way of being sure
webmaster's note:
Fair play to Mutter for even
remembering this, but it was actually at this June birthday party gig and
indeed Peter Gabriel did jump out of a cake and read "Now we are six"

Just looking at your
excellent website. I can fill in a bit about Saturday June 7th 1975.
The day before, I was moving permanently from South Mimms to
Cheltenham. Of course my Honda C90 got a serious puncture between Tring
and Aylesbury, so I phoned Dave and Budget who put me up for the night.
While there I wrote a happy birthday piece for the Friars mag, as did
Peter Gabriel who was scheduled to pop out of the cake on the Saturday
night. For some reason I thought Steve Harley might have been involved
as well...
I was a rock scribe at the time (NME,
Melody Maker, Sounds, Disc and Record Mirror - sometimes
writing under pseudonyms), and reviewed a few gigs at Friars as well
as making a couple of dodgy appearances at Friars with Gryphon and
Capability Brown
Strange but true, the first time I ever visited Lands End (in 1972) I
found Dave Stopps there too "of all the places in all the towns...!
