what happened next

The Beat had split by 1983. Cox and Steele with Roland Gift formed the hugely successful Fine Young Cannibals. Wakeling and Ranking Roger formed General Public. There are now two versions of The Beat with Wakeling fronting the English Beat (which is what they were always referred to) in the US and Roger and Morton the UK based version.

The Equators reformed in 2011.
