memories
Richard Williams (The Passions):

"Even though I had never been there, I was aware of Friars throughout the 1970s. It was on a par with the Roundhouse as a well known venue for rock gigs. The Passions appeared there with Killing Joke in 1980, shortly after signing to Polydor but before the release of ‘I’m in Love with a German Film Star’. However the song was included in our set at that time and was going down well with audiences.

I remember the gig being well attended and the audience reaction being particularly friendly and enthusiastic. I remember the promoter, David Stopps being incredibly welcoming and there being a huge bowl of fruit in the dressing room as well as our usual rider. We had a long chat with David who seemed like he was genuinely interested in the music. I also remember Jaz and Youth from Killing Joke coming into our dressing room at one point in the evening and some strange conversations taking place

UK Decay:

Yes we loved Friars! A real shame its confined to history, there were gigs in all the major towns around Ayelsbury but Friars had the edge with its vision on taking on new bands and notice of what its members/punters had to say. Always one for secret gigs visa iggy pop/david bowie etc etc. We got a real buzz playing there.Yes we were all members and proud, if i could find my old membership I would scan it in and post it on our website

what happened next
Killing Joke went their separate ways after a few ine up changes in 1996. Youth formed Brilliant in 1982 and played Friars. They reformed in 2002 and in 2012 they undertook a UK arena tour with The Cult and The Mission

The Passions lasted till 1983 and had a huge hit with I'm In Love With A German Filmstar
